HOLY LAND II
June 9-19, 2011
Cana  (John 2:1-11) was the site of Jesus' first
miracle, the beginning of His ministry, probably a
sad time for Mary, knowing that it was the
beginning of the end.  In this miracle the "Church
sees the confirmation of the goodness of
marriage and the proclamation that henceforth
marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ's
presence"  Catechism 1613."
Today the Church of Cana is located in Nazareth.
Below are photos of our visit to Capernaum, where Jesus made his home
in this cave complex, Peter's home, during the three years of his ministry:
Fishermen Peter, Andrew (his brother), James and John (sons of Zebedee)
lived there, along with Matthew the tax collector.  Capernaum is one of the
three cities curse
d by Jesus for its lack of faith.
First row:  an aerial view of Capernaum today.  It's just west of the entrance
of the Jordan River into the Sea of Galilee, where the best fishing has always
been.  The fish see the nets to catch them during the day so fishermen still
fish at night.
Second row:  Requisite Church marking the holy site of many of Jesus'
miracles and Peter's house-cave.  Most
people lived in caves or partial
caves
, which honeycomb most all of Israel.
Third row:  The old synagogue, very near Peter's home, has very visible
remains and it was in this synagogue where Jesus  gave his "Bread of Life
and eating of His Flesh and Blood" sermon (John 6:35-59).  At the far right is
a piece of the ancient facade with the image of the Israelite Ark of the
Covenant.  It was also here where Jesus healed the servant of the Roman
centurion who is credited with building the synagogue (Luke 7:3).
Banias, called Caesarea Philippi in Jesus' time, 25 miles north of the
Sea of Galilee, is the Rock and Cave where Jesus made Peter the Rock
(Kephas in Aramaic) and gave him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.
It was originally a temple to Pan, half-man, half-goat, the god of sheep
and shepherds. (Arabic has no "p" so it became "Ban.") and it's one of
the largest springs feeding the River Jordan. Jesus appointed Peter as
the true shepherd.  "...whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in
heaven and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Matthew 16:13-20
Extra stops:
Lunch at the Auberge Shulamit Restaurant, run by Catholic Palestinians.
The Rays like to support the Christians, especially these Arab Catholics.
The lunch was HUGE and 100% middle eastern with gobs of "salads," that
is, unidentified bowls of creamy goodies with something in them....and lamb,
which wasn't baa-aaa-aaad.  Note the Texas lady in the left window seat.
The Ancient boat of Galilee, dated sometime during the first century Anno
Domini
.
Extra stop in  Bethlehem:  lunch, falafils, "Bethlehem fast food," at the Christmas Tree Restaurant, also run by Catholic Palestinian
Arabs; shopping at the Kandu Christian shop, where I bought an olive tree nativity and a Jerusalem cross.  The Rays are always
trying to support the Christians in the Holy Land.

The water was clean,
clear and very cold.

Church of the Annunciation, in Nazareth, is where the
Angel Gabriel approached Mary.  None of this would have
happened unless Mary had said "Yes" to God (Luke 1:26-38)
