After a day spent touring the city of Parma and its cathedral we went to a proscuitto
factory and then had a fabulous dinner. It was all family style, all 29 of us together. Wine
flowed. After taking a couple of decongestants, I imbibed of the wines. They were well
worth the pill.
There were four people on the tour, two WONderful widows and two single men, who
were absolutely delightful. The men weren't traveling together but they were, in their own
ways, each a hoot. Between the four of them I enjoyed myself so much that I start
laughing....it had been a long time since I had laughed so much and so often.
We started and ended in Milano, an often-maligned city by an acquaintance. How glad I was that I decided to give the city a chance.
We all took the City Tour one day #1, then, on my own, after the Globus tour was done, I took a walking city tour ending with a visit
to the LAST SUPPER. It's a great city and I'll be back there again. It really is centrally located in Europe--almost as good as
Frankfurt. As always in Italy the food was superb.
We drove through this delightful town on our way to Lucca. We also visited the Ferreri Gallery--the guys really liked that. I had
some gelato there. Lucca was a medieval town but....the dinner we had there was OUT OF THIS WORLD. It was like
something out of the Godfather, out in a garden, wines with every dish, 10 separate courses. It was an extra tour which
almost everyone took. What a feast!
Cinque Terre was very nice, as I always love being out on the
water...and we were all afternoon. We didn't walk between the
towns; we took the public ferries. We only stopped in two of
them, visited and had lunch. We finished at Monterosso and
took the train to Santa Margherita Ligure, my ole stomping
grounds. I stayed there for five days and nights in 2007, and,
since my hip hurt so much, I didn't visit the Cinque Terre but
stayed at a lovely 5-star hotel there on the hill. It was truly
delightful. So I was able to revisit one of my favorite places on
Italy's north coast.

Genova and Turin were both new to me. We did the whole city tour and
all. I liked Genova even though what there was to see were OLD
CHURCHES and a very old harbor town. I liked it. Turin was marvelous,
especially the whole story of the holy shroud. Of course, it was behind a
screen, as it only comes out for display every 20-25 years and that was a
few years ago. The movie (silent) and literature explained that the
newest find with the newest technology showed some pollen in the
weave of the Shroud that was from the time of Christ, so whoever was in
that Shroud was from the first century Anno Domini.
The last place we visited before returned to Milano was a tapestry museum at Scassa, where they made and showed these
tapestries made in the image of major modern art. One of the tapestry weavers was there working.
LAKE COMO A driver picked me up in Milano and drove me to my nice 4-star, 71-room hotel on the Lake in Como. I spent a delightful three nights there, saw Bellagio, had lunch there, bought more beautiful silk scarves there and spend almost the entire day on the lake. I went to Mass every evening at the Cathedral. I ate gelato every day! I guess that's a given.
